The welfare state may be based on a mistaken view of human nature, but it is ( at least for me) the better mistake, a more dignified and humane foundation for a civilization. China, which is positioning itself to take the reins, has fashioned a contradictory hodgepodge of raw, exploitative capitalism and sermonizing but clearly sclerotic Maoism. (The party is actually pushing a Mao biopic this summer).
