I had a great time at our fiftieth reunion—the first time I had returned there—reconnecting after half a century with some old friends. One of these, Milton Bell, a rather brilliant guy who at least in recent years has lived in Austin as some kind of computer/electronics expert, sent me a note à propos of this hog/blog posting, which is so interesting that I quote part of it here:

“As for razorbacks, I'm afraid their demise is exaggerated. There are thousands of feral porkers roaming the bottoms of Titus County, some of which go back several generations. When I was a child there, just after dirt was invented, people ran hogs in the bottoms and these hogs bred with already wild populations and the herds grew. There were yearly "round-ups" much like cattle round-ups on ranches. New pigs were identified and marked with ear-notches and some were hauled away to be fattened for fresh meat. Hogs are pretty intelligent creatures and many were never caught nor marked.

“Apparently the same story was repeated somewhat in other locals. There are large populations of feral hogs now in Dallas suburbs and we have a problem with them here in Austin as well. They are capable of doing incredible damage to lawns, gardens, and to other livestock. I've seen them on deer leases west of here and back home in Titus County and they can be vicious and dangerous. Fortunately, I've only seen them from the "safety" of a tree stand but their clicking teeth and that razorback mane that they can erect at will is pretty scary.”John V. Most notably "The Porcine Chronicles" which contains some of the funniest poems ever concerning pigs. For example:

Jubilate Agno, 1975
by David Lee

Christopher Smart, 1722-1771 Blackula Poland China, 1971-1975 (memorandus)

For I will consider my black sow Blackula.
For she is the servant of the god of the feed bucket and serveth him.
For she worships the god in him and the secret of his pail in her way.
For this is done by screams of incantation at the appointed hour and lusty bites of daily communion.
For she stands with forelegs upon the top rail of the wooden fence in supplication.
For she grunts her thanks while she eats.
For she stands for the red boar with closed eyes at the appointed hour.
For having done she lies in the mud to consider herself.
For this she performs in ten degrees.....

The rest is at

http://www.poetryfoundation.org/archive/poem.html?id=237324vanderleunhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10296245324443413545noreply@blogger.com
